RECREATION BASKETBALL & CLINICS
78PYC basketball is divided into three programs; recreation (coed and girls), clinics, and travel.
(Co-ed 9-17 years old & Girls 9-14 years old)
In our Co-ed (mostly boys) and Girls Recreational Divisions we focus on creating balanced competition by evaluating all players and then balancing the skill levels on the teams so that everyone has an equal chance of winning. This is recreational basketball, so the focus is on learning and having fun, not the win-loss record. The rules require that all players get at least two quarters of playing time.
The schedule is set in two hour blocks (where the permits and team sizes allow) so that the players practice the first hour and then have their game the second hour. Some coaches may hold additional practices during the week, but those are optional, although many players welcome the chance for additional practice. The fee includes 10-12 weeks of basketball practice and games, uniform jerseys, awards, and an end of season tournament.
Evaluations take place in November; the season begins in early December and lasts through March. Co-ed recreational basketball is available for players 9 to 17 years of age. Girls-only recreational basketball is available for girls 9 to 14 years of age.
All recreational programs take place on the weekends in local public school gyms, the specific days and times to be determined, based on registration numbers and school gymnasium availability.
BASKETBALL CLINICS – KINGS AND COMETS ACADEMIES
(5-8 year olds)
Our Co-ed and Girls’ Clinics are designed to provide players, ages 5-8, with sound instruction in the fundamentals of basketball. Under the guidance of our director of training and instruction, David Robinson, and experienced coaches and former college players, our players learn to dribble, pass, shoot, play defense, and to function as part of a team. We also teach young players to learn both from winning and losing, and that working hard produces results.
All basketball clinics are held on the weekend. Fall clinics start in September and last through the end of November (ages for fall clinics are calculated as of September 15th, 2013). Winter clinics start in December and last through late March. Ages for clinics are calculated as of December 31 of that year.
Co-ed clinics are split into two groups, 5 and 6 year old players (Cubs) and 7 and 8 year old players (Bears). Neither group requires any previous basketball experience.
Girls’ only prep clinics are available for 7 to 9 year old players.
Clinic fees includes weekly instructional sessions, a team jersey, individual awards and completion certificates, and participation in a demonstration of their skills in our recreational basketball championship day in mid-March.
Our experience in developing young players, supported by a great deal of research in the field, shows that players are better suited to compete later if more attention to development of basic skills is the emphasis during their early stages of sports development.
When you register, you will have the opportunity to select a specific time slot. They fill quickly.
SUMMER & HOLIDAY ACADEMIES
As part of our training programs, the Kings hold a summer Kings Basketball Academy – a week-long full day basketball training sessions for those players wanting to take their skills to the next level. These sessions are held during the summer and during school breaks and are run by current or former high school and college players.
TRAVEL BASKETBALL – KINGS & COMETS
These are highly competitive AAU programs so not everyone will be selected. If chosen, playing time will be based on merit and not guaranteed. These programs require a high level of commitment from both players and parents.
Tryouts for the Brooklyn Kings boys travel basketball teams begin in October. Tryouts for the Brooklyn Comets girls AAU teams are in February.
